Emergency and Inclement Weather Notifications

Hazardous weather or unexpected emergencies such as power outages may require changes in school and bus schedules to ensure the safety of our staff members and students.  In order to ensure that all families receive important, emergency information, North Marion uses several systems to communicate with families.

FlashAlert System

If there is an emergency at the North Marion School District, we will alert parents and families immediately through the FlashAlert notification system. Click link here for Current FlashAlert for North Marion School District.  Sign–up details are below.

FlashAlert notifies the public of school emergencies, by feeding directly into local news stations, sending push notifications and email directly to the subscriber’s mobile phone (if signed-up), as soon as decision is made.  In some cases we may make the decision, the night before, or as early as 4 a.m.  To receive instant messaging for school delays, and closure alerts, visit the North Marion FlashAlert page.  To sign up for FlashAlert in your community, visit www.flashalert.net.

Parent Square

North Marion will keep parents and staff posted about school closures and delays on ParentSquare.  All staff and parents must sign up for ParentSquare with a cell number and email address to receive emergency updates such as weather alerts via text, phone, and email.  Learn more about how to update and/or customize your school communications through ParentSquare on our website, as well.  If you have questions, contact your school office.

Social Media Updates

Building Principals and key staff maintain the North Marion School District social media pages. We will try to update you on current events and may add weather updates on our sites. However, we will notify you directly and post to our website if there are major alerts.

Emergency / Inclement Weather

Schools in the North Marion School District may close due to severe weather, power outages, or other emergency events or student safety situations.   Severe weather impacting transportation prompting a delay, a closure, or early release status will be posted as early as possible using (in this order) the FlashAlert System, Parent Square (district auto-dialer), NMSD School’s Facebook pages, and to the District Website home page.  All staff and families are encouraged to subscribe.

The Superintendent chooses whether to make a closure or delay based on local outage and media reports and recommendations from transportation officials, who monitor road conditions within the School District boundaries. These are the four primary announcement types:

  • School Closed: All schools will be closed for the day. There will be no before-school or after-school child care services. All activities, practices, or events are canceled or postponed unless otherwise notified. Staff is not to report to work. Emergency personnel may be requested if needed.
  • Early Closure: All schools will dismiss early if afternoon conditions are considered to be dangerous.  Media notification and Parent Square notifications will be activated.
  • One-Hour Delay Opening: All schools and bus schedules will run one hour later than regular starting time.  Schools will end at the normal times.  Child care services may be delayed. Do not drop off children until school officials have arrived safely.
  • Two-Hour Delay Opening: All schools and bus schedules will run two hours later than the usual starting time. No morning preschool classes will be held. Child care services may be delayed. Afternoon preschool classes will be on the regular schedule. Schools will end at the normal times.

If conditions are severe enough to threaten the safety of our staff and students, the School Closure or Delayed Opening information will be posted online and will broadcast on the following Radio and TV Stations, as soon as the decision has been made, as early as 5:30 a.m.

Please do not call the schools directly as it could overload the phone system and prevent office staff from making the necessary emergency phone calls regarding closures, power outages, leakages, etc.

Emergency/Inclement Weather Transportation for Students Attending Out of District

The safety of our students is our first priority and concern.  As we enter inclement weather season, we wanted to communicate with you about our transportation protocols for students attending an out-of-district placement.

For families residing in the North Marion School District whose student is attending an out-of-district placement, the following will apply:

What happens if….

Transportation

North Marion is CLOSED

No transportation will be provided for your student

North Marion is on a 2 HOUR DELAY

Transportation will be provided but on a 2 hour delay (unless the attending district is closed)

The attending school is CLOSED

No transportation will be provided (even if NMSD remains open)

The attending school is on a   2 HOUR DELAY

Transportation will be provided on a two-hour delay (as long as NMSD remains open or is on a two-hour delay)

Due to the fact that we must also consider the physical route that our drivers must take to provide transportation, we must also consider districts that are on the route between NMSD and the attending school.

What happens if….

Transportation

A district on the route between NMSD and the attending school is CLOSED

No transportation will be provided (even if NMSD or the attending school are open)

A district on the route between NMSD and the attending school is on a 2 HOUR DELAY

If a school district on the route between NMSD and the attending school district announces a two-hour delay, transportation will be provided on a two-hour delay even if NMSD and or the attending school district is not on a delay.

Please check the status of both the attending School District and North Marion School District to determine your child’s transportation during inclement weather
