Marcelino Machorro was relaxing at a Middle School cafeteria table with his wife and three daughters after the Awards Dessert Banquet on June 1, and his face was glowing.

One of his daughters, sixth-grader Kelly Machorro, had received the Principal’s Award and was among dozens of honorees who were celebrated during the ceremony that evening.

“I feel like I’m doing something good in this life,” Marcelino Machorro said.

To the joy of families, including Machorro’s, the annual recognition ceremony returned to the Middle School last week after a two-year hiatus. Students and their loved ones settled onto bleachers in the gym, listening while Principal Tami Badinger announced each winner. Teachers took turns rushing certificates up to each student, their feet pounding in the stands.

Afterward, students and families in their finest fashions clutched balloons and bouquets, a light scent of flowers and perfume wafting through the gym. They snapped photos and the crowd then shifted into the cafeteria to taste some melty chocolate chip cookies.

Right after the ceremony, eighth-grader Emily Diaz and her cousin, sixth-grader Mardelsol Barajas, coordinated in striped summer dresses and denim jackets, were among the students posing for pictures in the gym, their moms tapping fiercely at their phones’ shutter buttons.

Diaz clutched certificates including the President’s Award for Educational Excellence, an award for eighth-graders who have earned a 3.5 cumulative GPA throughout middle school. Meanwhile, Barajas gingerly held her English Language Proficiency Award, which required her to pass an exam in English.

“It feels like I made it because I passed it,” Barajas said, softly.

Diaz said she was thrilled that her hard work had finally paid off, a sentiment that many other students echoed throughout the night, including seventh-graders and Principal’s Award and Principal’s Pin winners Colby Jones and Ethan Kratochvil.

Jones said that these types of events prove to students that “hard work comes with rewards” and Kratochvil, who also won the Always on Time award, said the events also “make people feel good about what they did.”

Eighth-grader Natalie Parmenter was truly thrilled to have won a slew of awards, including the President's Pin for students in the top 95th percentile over their three years at the Middle School, translating to a near perfect or perfect 4.0 GPA. She was also basking in a moment of triumph in a friendly sibling rivalry with her older brother Calvin Parmenter, a ninth-grader.

“It feels good, beating him,” she said, cheerfully.

Their mom, Sara Parmenter, chimed in with, “There’s always a competition.”

“I’m winning,” Natalie declared.

Calvin shook his head in denial, but he was smiling, plainly overjoyed for his smart little sister.

Overall, the evening was simply a wonderful moment for everyone, even siblings, to see their loved ones shine. Students like Kelly Machorro were glad to have that moment.

“I’m proud,” she said. “It feels good because I can tell them all that I achieved.”
