Visit the Oregon Zoo, the Bonneville Dam, and the Hopkins Demonstration Forest!

The entire North Marion Middle School student body is welcome to attend three day-long field trips this April.

The Outdoor Learning Experience will be held on April 1, 8, and 15, with each grade visiting the same places, but on different days. The students will explore the fish ladder at the Bonneville Dam in the Columbia River Gorge; greet bears, elephants, and more at the Oregon Zoo in Portland; and dig into lessons at the Hopkins Demonstration Forest in Oregon City. 

Middle School Math Teacher and Outdoor School Coordinator Amanda Kahle says that she wants students to know that they can attend regardless of whether a family can pay the fee — and more chaperones are needed, so get ready for a fun trip! 

Kahle says that she is offering a reminder now because 86 permission slips have not been turned in yet, 22% of the student body. She will accept permission slips until the day of the first trip, April 1. Kahle says that she wants people to be able to attend, no matter what.

“We don’t want you to stay behind,” Kahle says.

If you don’t have a permission slip, you can get one from the front office, and that’s where to submit it too. Permission slips for each grade level are also available as pdfs attached to this story on the School District website and also in the letter in ParentSquare. Return a completed permission slip to the Middle School front office.

Once that form is done, sign up as a volunteer! Kahle says that she still needs chaperones for the April 1 field trip. Chaperones must fill out a background form, available on the Volunteer Forms webpage on the website and to show their vaccine card (no booster required) to the staff at the front office, either in person or via email. Bring a bagged lunch or $4.50 to purchase one, although students’ meals are free. Return the forms to the front office as soon as possible so that the background check can be completed in time. It takes a couple days.
