Honoring Our Own

Parents weren’t the only ones holding back their tears during North Marion High School Awards Night on May 19. 

Just about everyone who had seen all that students have gone through in these pandemic years could not help but be moved as dozens of hard-working North Marion seniors were recognized for excelling under difficult circumstances. 

And here it all was coming to a close with one of the best times for the North Marion community, besides graduation in June! So many students were practically festooned with honors, awards, and scholarships. They've certainly risen to the challenge these past two years. 

The crowd of supporters laughed, cheered, clapped, and cried — cried a lot. What was awe-inspiring about these students was that so many of them have been knocking down barriers since well before the pandemic. Students credited their success to their families and their own resolve.

“I am mostly thinking of my parents and all the sacrifices they made for my siblings and myself to get an education because they weren’t able to themselves,” said awardee Ime Guzman Martinez, who, as the youngest, is off to college, just like all of his siblings.

Guzman Martinez received a North Marion Honors Diploma and was lauded as a National Honor Society (NHS) member, Key Club member, and Biliteracy Seal recipient, as well as the ASB President and a recipient of four scholarships (that we know of so far). 

Another heavily decorated student was Norma Lopez Paz, also an ASB and Key Club member and Honors Diploma recipient. At the event, Lopez Paz took home four scholarships, including one from the prestigious Ford Scholars Program. Lopez Paz plans to study political science at the University of Portland, with her eye on a career as an immigration lawyer. Like Guzman Martinez, she was grateful for her family’s support.

“I want to thank my family for everything that they’re given me,” Lopez Paz said. “This is really all about them, and in the future, it will continue to be all about them.”

Another student who made frequent trips to the awards podium was Gage Hurst, who was recognized as one of the valedictorians, an Honors Diploma awardee, a member of ASB and NHS, and the winner of four scholarships. Hurst, who intends to major in financial management at Brigham Young University, said that this honors his years of service volunteering with ASB, FBLA, and Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

“This is a great way to end my High School career,” Hurst said. “It really has been amazing just to be recognized.”
