During North Marion’s National Honor Society (NHS) Tapping Ceremony last week, student officers explained the meaning of the four pillars of NHS — character, service, scholarship, and leadership — before honoring new inductees with a pin and a picture.
As students shared the important meaning of each pillar, they lit one of four pillar-style candles set on one of the round tables in the North Marion High School Commons. Senior Mallory Patzer spoke about two pillars, offering a soulful description of character and leadership during the May 18 ceremony.
“The price of leadership is sacrifice,” Patzer said.
The inductees came forward to spark a tiny fire on the tip of the wick of a tealight candle and say a vow, often with their parents at their side. Current NHS members also adorned new members’ shoulders with an NHS pin. The High School principals and several teachers attended along with the families, some of them briefly addressing the crowd of about 40 people.
“Congratulations,” said Bill Rhoades, the CoPrincipal of Teacher and Learning. “Thank you for your leadership and your inspiration. You inspire us to keep coming back every day.”
These new NHS members will be continue the tradition of inspiring educators while upholding the four pillars of NHS:
