The rapid rise in COVID-19 cases driven by the Omicron variant has contributed to a fast rise in absences of students and staff at North Marion Middle School. The ability to fully staff and safely operate our schools is a key factor that has resulted in the difficult decision to transition North Marion Middle School to short-term distance learning.

Middle School Counselor Kira Luscher loves hiking with husband, Lane, and dog, Nova at places like at Silver Falls State Park. Welcome, Kira Luscher!

North Marion Middle School’s one counselor was supporting 400 teenagers in the midst of “these trying times” for several months. But no more! Despite a national labor shortage, the school’s co-principals were able to recruit a second Middle School Counselor, Kira Luscher, who came on board in December.

From microgreens to pole beans! Home gardening is part of Oregon’s history, but more than ever before, Oregonians can benefit from growing gardens and sharing garden knowledge and skills. The Grow This! Oregon Garden Challenge is a call to action to families, schools and other groups to garden together and eat what we grow.  

What is the 2022 Challenge? Anyone can join using their own seeds! While supplies last, Oregonians who sign up and request seeds will be mailed seeds free of charge:

North Marion School District logo Part 2: ‘All My Teachers Know Me,’ a Visit to a High School Classroom

When Petula Clark belted out the “Downtown” soul hit of the 1960s, she could never have known that “Calculus: The Musical!” would set math lessons to the earworm ditty. (the mathematical lyrics include “derivatives of constants are always a slope of zero.”) But earlier this month, North Marion High School seniors were whispering or subtly mouthing the 2013 numbers-centric version in Math Teacher Remy Strapp’s Calculus Class. Strapp says that returning to in-person learning makes it easier to reach students through teacher or peer support and to offer more dynamic lessons, such as those that use singing or movement, or even a Jeopardy!-style math competition.

Month of January 2022 The School District Academic Calendar Has Changed

The North Marion School Board on Monday approved a request to adjust the Academic Calendar to change an instructional day to a Professional Development Day focusing on curriculum (January 3, 2022). 

“Teachers and IAs and everyone are working super, super hard,” K–5 Literacy Coach Page Gianella said at the Monday School Board meeting. “There is just not enough time to do what they need to do, so thank you to the administrators for recognizing that.”

One of the latest additions to the North Marion Board of Directors is a former U.S Air Force Major with a PhD and seven scientific publications to her name. But the community mostly knows her as Kristie Buckland, a married mom of a 10th-grader and a fifth-grader, who began her term on the School Board on Dec. 14, 2020.
